What is Sore Throat Treatment?

A sore throat is a common condition characterized by pain, irritation, or scratchiness in the throat, often making swallowing uncomfortable. It can be caused by viral infections like the common cold or flu, bacterial infections such as strep throat, allergies, dry air, or environmental pollutants. Treatment depends on the underlying cause, with viral sore throats typically resolving on their own, while bacterial infections may require antibiotics. Over-the-counter pain relievers, warm saltwater gargles, throat lozenges, and staying hydrated can help alleviate symptoms.

Causes of Sore Throat:

  • Viral Infections – Common colds, flu, mononucleosis, and COVID-19 can lead to throat irritation.
  • Bacterial Infections – Strep throat caused by Streptococcus bacteria is a primary bacterial cause.
  • Acid Reflux (GERD) – Stomach acid backing up into the throat can cause persistent soreness.
  • Environmental Irritants – Exposure to smoke, pollution, or chemicals can inflame the throat.
  • Overuse of Vocal Cords – Excessive talking, shouting, or singing can strain the throat muscles.
  • Smoking and Alcohol Consumption – These can irritate the throat lining and increase inflammation.

Symptoms of Sore Throat:

  • Pain or Scratchy Sensation – The most common symptom, often worsened by swallowing or talking.
  • Difficulty Swallowing – The throat may feel tight, painful, or obstructed, making swallowing uncomfortable.
  • Dry Throat – A dry, uncomfortable feeling in the throat, often exacerbated by breathing through the mouth.
  • Redness and Swelling – The throat and tonsils may appear red and swollen, indicating inflammation.
  • White Patches or Spots – Presence of pus or white spots on the tonsils, which could indicate a bacterial infection like strep throat.
  • Fever – A mild to high fever may accompany a sore throat, particularly with bacterial infections.
